SEO is one of those terms that gets thrown around constantly but rarely explained clearly. Here is the plain English version, without acronyms or jargon.
What it means
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It means making changes to your website so it appears higher when people search for what you offer. When someone types "accountant near me" or "best coffee in [your city]" into Google, the businesses at the top have usually done some SEO work to get there. The rest get very little traffic.
Why it matters
Paid ads work while you are paying for them. The moment you stop, you disappear. SEO builds something that keeps working. A business that ranks on the first page for five relevant searches is getting leads continuously, with no ongoing ad spend. It takes time to build, but once it is there, it compounds.
Most small businesses that invest consistently in SEO over six to twelve months see a steady and growing stream of enquiries from people who found them through search.
The things you can fix yourself
Your page title is the text that appears in browser tabs and search results. "Home" tells Google nothing. "Physiotherapy Clinic in [Your Area] | Book Online" tells it exactly what you do and where. This single change can make a real difference to how often you appear in search.
Your main heading should say clearly what you do and who you serve. "Welcome to our website" is useless. "Affordable bookkeeping for small businesses in [Your City]" is useful to both Google and the person reading it.
Your meta description is the two-line summary under your title in search results. It does not affect your ranking directly, but it affects whether people click. Write it for the human reading it.
What takes longer
Off-page SEO is about other websites linking to yours. When reputable sites link to your business, it tells Google you are worth recommending. This builds slowly and is harder to control directly. Listing your business in industry directories, getting featured in local press, and asking satisfied clients to link to you are all legitimate ways to build it over time.
How long until you see results
Honest answer: three to six months for early signs, six to twelve months for meaningful results. SEO is not a quick fix. It is a long-term asset. The best time to start is today.
